FEW
TIPS TO KEEP YOUR SHOES IN TOP CONDITION
- Cleaning shoes regularly helps prevent dirt from
accumulating
- Polishing leather shoes regularly maintains their
color and suppleness.
- Wet shoes must be dried at room temperatures
away from direct heat. Inserting a shoetree or ball of newspapers
help maintaining their shape and absorb moisture.
- Shoetrees must be used to help maintain appearance
and expend the life of leather shoes.
- Keep your shoes covered in a shoe bag.
- Always use a shoe horn while putting on your
shoes.
WHEN BUYING A PAIR OF SHOES,
REMEMBER.......
- When trying on shoes, make sure you are wearing the
appropriate socks.
- Feet tend to vary in size, measure the length and the
width of your feet.
- The first shoe you try on must be for your larger foot.
For most people their larger foot is the opposite from the hand they
write with.
- Stand up and walk around with your shoes. You must
be able to wiggle your toes in from of the shoe.
- Make sure the heels do not slip out of the back of
the shoe.
- If one foot is considerably larger than the other,
add in insole in the smaller one instead of purchasing a tight pair.
- Never select a shoe only by six A size seven shoe from
one brand may not fit the same as a size seven from the other.
- Select a pair that confirms closely to the shape of
your foot and feels comfortable.
ON YOUR MARKS
YOU MAY DRESS TO
YOUR TEETH WITH THE RIGHT LABELS BUT WITHOUT THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES,
YOUR STYLE STATEMENT WOULD BE OVER EVEN BEFORE YOU STARTED IT. IN FACT,
CORRECT FOOTWEAR NOT ONLY ENHANCES YOUR PERSONALITY BUT ALSO GIVES YOU
THAT STYLISH EDGE, SAYS DESIGNER RINA SHAH OF RINALDI.
You could be wearing
the most formal business suit or a sexy, seductive evening gown, but
the entire picture would be ruined if you wore flats with the suit and
closed pumps with your gown. Not only is the right footwear important
in terms of looking good and feeling great, it also plays an important
role in our overall well-being. Imagine what a pair of uncomfortable
or biting shoes would do to your day! Footwear that perfectly matches
the attire and is comfortable and relaxing to wear is really the right
combination of what you should look for while you're 'shoe shopping'.
It's a common misconception
that women with problems like flat feet / high arches cannot wear smart
elegant shoes or that women who are overweight or suffer from constant
backaches should remain close to the ground with their flat soles. Pregnant
women need to take special care of the shoes they wear, since it makes
all the difference in achieving the right balance, walking comfortably
and eliminating strain on the back. Working women also need to take
special care while selecting footwear since they are usually on their
feet the entire day, which puts a lot of pressure on the feet. The wrong
footwear could completely tire you out.
PROBLEM FEET
Women with high
arches on their foot could avoid wearing sandals with straps that run
across the foot - this will only accentuate your problem and make it
more visible. Wear sandals with back straps or back open sandals with
narrow straps across the toes. Closed shoes can be uncomfortable and
you might even have a problem fitting into them because of their snug
fit. Since the foot is heavier, avoid very high heels. Wearing them
over long periods would only lead to foot aches and discomfort. In some
cases, feet could swell up. Women with flat feet (with no arches or
a very minimal arch) should stick to Comfortable padded footwear which
cases the soles well while completely avoiding very high heels, which
hardly support the flat soles. Short women or those who prefer high
heels should look for a pair of sandals that has a good grip all around.
If not, you could sprain your foot or even fall.
WATCHING THE WEIGHT
Overweight women should keep in mind that the entire weight of the body
falls on the feet, creating lot of pressure on them and tiring them
easily. It's wise, therefore, to stick to either flats or smaller heels
with a good grip. If you prefer wearing heels for more formal occasions,
wear a heeled shoe with a back strap that supports the foot well. Again,
stilettos or very high heels would not take the body weight and are
risky. Platforms or thick heels are your best bet.
BACKING YOU ALL THE WAY
Women with back problems should completely avoid wearing high heels
since it only adds more pressure to the back. Wear padded shoes and
sandals to support the spine. Very high heels tend to stress out the
spine and the person wearing high heels always tends to lean forward
which hurts the spine. When feet are closer to the ground, the spine
is in a better state of rest.
WORKING WELL
Women who are always
on the move should wear very comfortable shoes and sandals since they
have to be on their feet all day. What you need is good support and
comfort to make sure that your feet don't tire you out. A flat cushioned
shoe or if heels are preferred, then a two-inch block heel, is most
comfortable. If you don't have to report to office or if you have no
meetings, fashionable slip-on sneaker shoes could also work well with
their smart, casual look. If your job requires you to wear formal like
an office suit, closed but comfortable court shoes are fine, or if you
wear an A-line skirt, then a good gripped sandal with a one-inch heel
works well. If you need to wear a saree to work, a trendy, chappal type
design which is supportive and comfortable with a 1-2 inch heel completes
the traditional look.
GENTLE ON THE KNEES
If you have painful
knees or have undergone knee surgery, the feet have to be completely
relaxed and the footwear has to be such that it does not give a jerk
to the knees. Thick soled, padded footwear is just great. Avoid heels
completely. Shoes with thick back straps and prominent toe straps are
perfect. Ask your doctor to recommend the kind of footwear to be worn
in serious cases.
TAKING CARE OF TO-BE MOMMY
Expectant mothers should always wear comfortable sandals and shoes that
are padded and offer enough support while walking. Back straps and back
buckles for which you need to bend down can be bothersome. Flat flip
flops could be dangerous since they are very light and slip off easily,
while offering no support at all. High heels are a big no since they
add pressure to the already pressurized back and could even make you
lose balance at times. Some women suffer from water retention which
leads to swollen feet for them, closed shoes would only add to the misery.
By and large, pregnant women should stick to open sandals that have
a soft padding and a slightly raised level and let the feet breathe,
for ultimate comfort and balance. What you should completely avoid are
platform shoes and clog heels since you would be most prone to a nasty
fall in them.
Besides issues like
problem feet, weight and pregnancy one also needs to keep the weather
in mind before stepping into footwear. A snug, closed pump in the height
of summers would spell discomfort, sweaty soles and smelly, aching feet
at the end of the day.
POINTERS FOR SEASONAL FOOTWEAR SUMMER
SOLES
- Open strapy sandals with trimmings like ribbons, flowers,
lace, studs, beads, etc. add more caller and excitement to footwear.
- Cool, funky colours like greens, oranges, blues, reds,
baby pinks, yellows and lots of white/off-white are in.
- Let your feet breathe in summer in open sandals in
this hot, muggy weather. Look for sandals that are made with fabrics
that breathe. Choose shoes that have been made with materials like
denim, canvas and soft cottons with the same kind of trimmings.
- If you are hitting the beach or the pool, flip flops
would be a good idea since they are comfortable, easy to walk on the
sand/tiles and easy to slip off/on.
- Summer means sun -a lot of bright sunny colours in
soft, light fabrics with summery flowers and beads complete the picture
on a hot sunny day!
- If such footwear is not suitable for work or an evening
out, look for formal-looking strappy sandals in a heel that you are
comfortable in.
Keep toes and backs open, if possible.
WET WEATHER WEDGIES
- Leather tends to get spoilt in the wet, humid climate
of the rainy I season. Fungus also tends to grow on wet, undried leather.
Care should be taken to keep leather shoes clean and dry. One can
also switch to synthetic leather or shoes with plastic straps. These
materials are easy to clean, dry quickly and are not spoiled to a
great extent by water.
- Do not wear shoes where water can seep in easily (back
or front open shoes) since this causes smelly feet. Sandals are preferable.
- Avoid cloth and satin shoes that get dirt)" and
are difficult to clean. Avoid suede and embroidered shoes, since water
will ruin the material and embroideries. The colour could also run.
- If you do happen to get your best footwear wet, dry
it immediately in the sun and then clean with a dry cloth. Never let
wet leather lie.
- If you are expecting rain or if
it's already raining, select your footwear accordingly. Don't wear
your best shoes. You could wear an old pair or closed shoes and change
into your better footwear later.
